South Australians should be asking themselves what promises the Weatherill Labor Government will break in today’s Budget.
“The Weatherill Labor Government has spent 12 years making and breaking promises and has shown that it cannot be trusted,” said Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas.
“There is already serious doubt over one of the Weatherill Labor Government’s key election promises being delivered – the delivery of a budget surplus in 2015/16.”
This promise was reiterated in the Mid-Year Budget Review, January Budget Update and Labor’s election costings document.
The other major promise which will be broken today is Mr Weatherill’s promise to deliver 100,000 new jobs by Feb 2016.
Mr Weatherill on 11 April 2013 was asked whether he stood by this promise and he said:
“Yes, that is our intention.” (Hansard, 11/04/13)
“The Weatherill Labor Government will continue to use the Federal Budget in an attempt to cover up 12 years of its own financial mismanagement of the South Australian budget,” said Mr Lucas.
“South Australians know that prior to the Federal Budget the Weatherill Government had already delivered annual deficits of $1 billion and debt heading towards $14 billion.
“However, Premier Weatherill and Treasurer Koutsantonis have a responsibility to deliver on all of Labor’s election promises in today’s Budget.
“After 12 years of Labor, South Australians deserve better than more broken promises.”
