There is serious doubt over one of the Weatherill Labor Government’s key election promises being delivered in this week’s State Budget.
The Weatherill Labor Government has promised to deliver a budget surplus in 2015/16 since the 2013 State Budget.
This promise was reiterated in the Mid-Year Budget Review, January Budget Update and Labor’s election costings document.
However, this morning on 891ABC, Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis was softening ground to break his Government’s budget surplus promise:
Presenter: “Are you still committed Tom Koutsantonis to delivering a surplus…in 2015/16?
Koutsantonis: “I’ll be doing all I can to deliver surpluses but ultimately we’ve been set with some very, very difficult challenges.”
“The Weatherill Labor Government has spent 12 years making and breaking promises and has shown that it cannot be trusted,” said Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas.
“Despite promising to deliver seven budget surpluses, the Weatherill Labor Government has instead delivered six budget deficits, including the highest deficit in the state’s history.
“Will that become seven budget deficits in eight years in this week’s Budget?
“The Weatherill Labor Government will continue to use the Federal Budget in an attempt to cover up 12 years of its own financial mismanagement of the South Australian budget.
“Even if the Weatherill Labor Government promises a surplus in 15/16 South Australians will be wary about believing them – they originally promised a $840 million surplus for 14/15 yet the latest estimate shows a $576 million deficit.
“After 12 years of Labor, South Australians deserve better than more broken promises.”
