After repeated calls from the State Liberals, the Ambulance Employees’ Association and the general public, Minister Snelling has finally been forced into taking action to tackle the ramping crisis occurring at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC).
In recent days there have been a number of disturbing reports of ramping including a woman who had been vomiting for 18 hours being forced to wait outside the emergency department for about an hour.
Mr.Snelling has now announced a 3 point action plan to tackle the ramping problem even though the Weatherill Government has been repeatedly denying there was a problem.
Shadow Health Minister Rob Lucas said the incident confirmed yet again that the South Australian health system is in crisis and it is sad to see that the Weatherill Government only seems to act when media and public pressure force them to act.
If this new plan is really the solution then why wasn’t it implemented years ago?
Doctors are already raising important questions about the supposed new plan. For example some doctors claim pregnant patients and those with chest pain should already be receiving priority treatment when they present at FMC.
President of the South Australian Salaried Medical Officers Association (SASMOA), Dr David Pope has also stated that Minister Snelling’s action plan is nothing new:
“It is not uncommon for politicians to announce what’s already occurring as a new thing to try and fool the public.” (Channel 10, 04/12/13)
Doctors have also claimed that the immediate transfer of mental health patients will be difficult, given the Weatherill Government’s closure of mental health beds and cuts to mental health services.
Mr.Snelling must now indicate what new resources, if any, he is providing to implement this supposed new action plan.
”South Australians deserve a better Government with the right priorities to get South Australia back on track,” said Mr Lucas.
