Labor acknowledges SA Health in financial crisis

Friday, 11 November 2011

Treasurer Snelling has acknowledged what the Liberal Opposition has known for some time now – SA Health is in financial crisis.

The Liberal Opposition asked Mr Snelling yesterday to confirm that, at the end of the 2010-11 financial year, private consultants PKF had to be appointed to fix a significant financial mess in SA Health.

In response to Liberal Opposition questions yesterday, Mr Snelling told Parliament, “I am not advised that there are any particular issues in Health about which I need to be particularly concerned.”

Other questions put to Mr Snelling included:

• Will Mr Snelling confirm that, at the end of the 2010-11 financial year, there were over $200 million in unexplained transactions in SA Health as a result of the new financial systems approved by Health Minister Hill?
• Is it the case that some of the accounts giving rise to the over $200 million worth of unexplained transactions in SA health relate to invoices which were paid twice?

“Despite Mr Snelling trying to distance himself from the crisis early yesterday, he eventually revealed that there are $60 million worth of unreconciled accounts at present,” Shadow Finance Minister Rob Lucas said.

“The Liberal Opposition is advised that this figure was well over $200 million when PKF was first appointed at the end of the financial year.

“We call on the Auditor-General to outline in his audit report the full extent of the unreconciled accounts in SA Health when PKF was first appointed.

“Mr Snelling and Mr Hill must explain how many accounts in SA Health were paid more than twice for the same account, and whether monies are being reimbursed.

“Not only that, but Mr Snelling and Mr Hill must explain to South Australian taxpayers how much consultants PKF are being paid to fix the problem.”

The Liberal Opposition has today submitted Freedom of Information requests to uncover the details of the financial mess which required the appointment of PKF.
