Labor looking to increase cost of concert tickets

Monday, 22 August 2011

The Labor Government is considering options for increasing ticket prices for concerts to help pay for public transport services, evidence to the Budget and Finance Committee revealed today.

The Big Day Out, other similar music festivals and concerts for artists such as AC/DC, Pink, Lady Gaga and Andre Rieu could all be affected.

Transport Chief Executive Rod Hook told the Committee charges of up to $50,000 could be applied to promoters of such profitable events which impacted on the demand for public transport services. These costs would be passed on to ticket buyers.

Mr Hook also indicated that similar charges could be applied to tickets to the Royal Adelaide Show, and that the same principle had already been applied to AFL football ticket prices to help pay for Footy Express Services to AAMI Stadium.

Shadow Finance Minister Rob Lucas said it was clear the Department was struggling to meet its budget savings task of $325 million over four years, peaking at $88 million per year by 2013-14.

“South Australian music fans will not be happy to hear they may pay the price for the Labor Government’s appalling financial management record,” Mr Lucas said.

Other evidence to the Committee included:

• 160 FTE staff had been reduced and another 311 had to be cut

• SAPOL had strongly opposed a Transport plan to reduce the current discretion of SAPOL officers on whether a fine should be charged every time a defect notice was issued, even for something like a faulty tail light – a compromise plan has now gone to Cabinet.

• The Adelaide Oval project budget will have to pay to fix problems with SACA’s brand new $115 million Western Stand redevelopment
