PROPERTY TAX concerns to be aired

Wednesday, 24 August 2005

Significant concerns about South Australia’s property taxation system will be aired this afternoon in the first public hearing of a Parliamentary inquiry into the collection of property taxes, Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas said today.

The Liberal Party succeeded in establishing a Select Committee to inquire into all matters relating to the issue of property taxes by State and Local Government, including sewerage charges by SA Water.

This afternoon’s first public hearing, from 2.00pm in the Plaza Room, Parliament House, will see former Valuer-General John Darley giving evidence. Mr Darley is also the Chair of the Land Tax Reform Association, which has been campaigning strongly against the Rann Government’s land tax policies.

“There are many inequities in South Australia’s current system of property taxation,” Mr Lucas said today.

“A number of these relate to the current system of property valuations which are used to determine the level of taxation, and as a former Valuer-General John Darley is highly qualified to explain what the current problems are and how they might now be addressed.

“There has been much public concern and attention about land tax over the past year or more, but there has also been great concern about council rates, stamp duties, sewerage charges, catchment levies and the Rann Water Tax.

“As a result of the property boom, the Rann Government has enjoyed a property tax windfall since it took office in March 2002, raking in $373m more in property taxes last year (2004-05) than in the last year of the former Liberal Government ($1104m compared to $731m).

“The refusal of Mike Rann and Kevin Foley to use the resources of government to meaningfully address these issues has left us no choice but to go down the road of a Select Committee, because South Australian taxpayers and ratepayers deserve a more equitable taxation system.”
