Leigh Creek Energy In-Situ Gasification Demonstration Project

Tuesday, 18 September 2018

On September 3, 2018 Leigh Creek Energy received final permission from the State Government under the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act 2000 to begin a trial of its Demonstration Plant.

The plant - in the Leigh Creek Coalfield - will trial for up to three months the burning of coal 500 metres underground to produce energy.

On the same day, Premier Steven Marshall received a request from the Adnyamathanha Traditional Lands Association (ATLA) to issue a direction under section 24 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988 to prohibit Leigh Creek Energy from proceeding with the Demonstration Plant.

ATLA is a prescribed body corporate, under the Native Title Act 1993, which represents the determined native title interests of the Adnyamathanha people.

The Premier delegated ATLA’s application to Treasurer Rob Lucas for consideration and a decision.

In helping reach his decision, Mr Lucas sought further information from ATLA about its request, and also sought comment from Leigh Creek Energy.

“After thorough deliberation, this morning I have advised both parties that I will not be issuing the direction requested,’’ said Mr Lucas.
