Premier Jay Weatherill needs to explain to South Australian taxpayers why his former
Department of Premier and Cabinet CEO, Mr Kym Winter-Dewhirst, received an estimated
$137,500 payment when he chose to resign.
In yesterday’s Budget Estimates it was revealed that Mr Winter-Dewhirst was given a
payment amounting to a quarter of his $550,000 a year salary when he resigned from his
position as CEO.
“South Australians will be stunned that Jay Weatherill saw fit to give a very highly-paid public servant three months’ termination pay, given the fact that Mr Winter-Dewhirst chose to resign and was not terminated,” said Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas.
“Mr Winter-Dewhirst infamously spent many hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ dollars on remodelling offices in the State Administration Centre, on filming himself recording a
message to DPC employees where an email would have sufficed, and on removing many
long-serving, hardworking senior public servants upon his appointment.
“Jay Weatherill’s decision to give Mr Winter-Dewhirst three months’ pay just doesn’t pass the common sense test and South Australians would be rightly outraged by this largesse.
“At a time when the state’s health services are being slashed under Transforming Health,
child protection is in chaos, and police stations have been shut, it’s shameful that Jay
Weatherill has seen fit to pay out a quarter of a year’s salary to one of the state’s highest
paid public servants.
“In addition to the $2.6 million advertising for the Premier’s energy plan, it shows his own
department has been out of control.
“After 15 years, this is sadly what South Australians have come to expect of a tired, arrogant and out of touch Weatherill Labor Government.
