Jack needs to get back to work

Wednesday, 19 April 2017

The resignation of the Chief Executive of the Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) Len Richards leaves Health Minister Jack Snelling with no option but to return from leave and take control of the move to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.

“The State Government is in the middle of the technical assessment period of the most expensive hospital in the world, the executive responsible for leading the transition to the nRAH has resigned yet the Health Minister intends to continue his leave,” said Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas.

“The nRAH is already $640 million over budget and more than a year overdue yet the Weatherill Government is happy for the project to drift along leaderless at this critical juncture.

“The fact Len Richards has resigned less than three months after being appointed to take charge of the transition to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital highlights the level of dysfunction in SA Health.

“With six nRAH project leaders having left in the last two years the project has been dangerously destabilised for too long.

“The question must be asked whether some executives are resigning because of the chaotic leadership of the Minister and Government on this project.

“There is clearly also a major problem with the appointment process Mr Snelling has been using when there is such a high turnover of executives.

“The Minister must also reveal what the constant turnover of executives has cost taxpayers.”

The nRAH project leaders who have left in the previous two years include:

  • David Panter, CEO of Central Adelaide Local Health Network (early 2015)
  • Andrew Nielsen, Program Director (March 2015)
  • Judith Carr, Project Director (April 2016)
  • David Swan,  CEO, SA Health (August 2016)
  • Julia Squire, CEO of Central Adelaide Local Health Network  (early 2017)
  • Len Richards, Interim CEO of Central Adelaide Local Health Network (early 2017)
