KEY WITNESSES DENY ATKINSON’S CLAIMS ON SECOND SET OF BOOKS

Friday, 11 February 2005

Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas says two key witnesses to the ‘stashed cash’ inquiry have directly contradicted claims made by Attorney-General Michael Atkinson that Kate Lennon kept two sets of books in the “Stashed Cash” affair.

In the Parliament on Monday Attorney-General Atkinson made the following claim:

“… Kate Lennon used one of the oldest accounting tricks known to man: she had two sets of books, one for the Treasurer, the Auditor-General, the parliament and the public and me, and a second set of books for a small circle who needed to know.”
Michael Atkinson, Hansard, February 7, 2005

“Appearing before the Upper House Select Committee this afternoon, two senior public servants denied the claim made by Attorney-General Atkinson,” Mr Lucas said today.

“Mr Ray Bown, Principal Policy Officer in Treasury, and Mr Andrew Swanson, Acting Manager Business and Financial Services Division in the Attorney-General’s Department, both explicitly denied that two sets of books, accounts, journals or ledgers were kept by Kate Lennon or the Attorney-General’s Department.

“It is now clear from evidence given to the committee that the books were always able to be audited and checked by Treasury officers and staff at the Auditor-General’s office.

“Every time the Committee meets there seems to be more embarrassing evidence for Attorney-General Atkinson and the Rann Government.

“This further increases the unsustainability of Mr Atkinson’s position.”
