EVIDENCE FROM KEY WITNESS PUTS MORE PRESSURE ON ATKINSON

Friday, 28 January 2005

Another key witness to the ‘stashed cash’ inquiry has given evidence conflicting with Attorney-General Michael Atkinson’s claim that he didn’t know that the ‘stashed cash’ account at the centre of the scandal even existed, Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas said today.

Former senior finance officer Kym Pennifold stated today that in about mid-2003 former CEO Kate Lennon told him that she had briefed Mr Atkinson on the details of the use of the Crown Solicitor’s Trust Account (CSTA).

“The important point to note in this is that this conversation occurred more than 12 months before this issue became public and controversial,” Mr Lucas said today.

“Mr Pennifold has in fact backed Kate Lennon’s claim that she had not only told Mr Atkinson but also told other people she had told Mr Atkinson about the use of the CSTA.

“Mr Pennifold also revealed today that the CSTA had been used by former governments for more than a decade to deposit funds in for various projects.

“For example, he indicated the Bannon Government had deposited more than a million dollars of money from the ill-fated Multi-Function Polis in the CSTA for a number of years and no-one including the Auditor-General had ever criticised the use of the CSTA in this way.

“Mr Atkinson’s position that he didn’t even know of the existence of the CSTA is looking increasingly unsustainable.”
