Treasurer Rob Lucas said today that ex union boss Peter Malinauskas and current shoppies union bosses were like economic ostriches burying their heads in the sand over the retail industry and shop trading hours reform.
After yesterday’s sad announcement of the closure of Radio Rentals stores, shoppies union boss Josh Peak was calling on the State Government to support a jobs plan for the retail industry.
Radio Rentals management yesterday highlighted the significant impact online trading had had on the viability of the business. Similar statements were made last month by Big W management.
“The sad reality is that bricks and mortar businesses, if they are going to thrive, will have to adapt to compete with the convenience provided by online shopping,” Mr Lucas said.
“Part of the response to the challenge of online shopping has to be shop trading hours reform so that bricks and mortar retailers can trade when they want to and when their customers want to shop.
“The fact that Roger Drake is now asking for extended trading hours for his West Beach store is further evidence of the need for reform.
“However, Mr Malinauskas and shoppies union bosses continue to ‘bury their heads in the sand’ and refuse to see the reality of what consumers want and why they increasingly choose online shopping.
“It’s time they recognise the reality and support the Marshall Liberal Government’s bold proposal for shop trading hours reform.”
